Research Interests

Sara earned her M.S. under the supervision of Michael A. Freitas at The Ohio State University. Her research focused on exploring the effects of aqueous-organic solvent systems on in-solution digestion and post-digestion 18O labeling efficiency. She earned her Ph.D. in Chemistry from The University of Akron under the supervision of Chrys Wesdemiotis. Her doctoral studies gave her the opportunity to design new ionization sources which were used to characterize various complex, commercially available polymers providing information about their thermal stability and composition. These studies involved fundamental mass spectrometry techniques (e.g., ambient ionization mass spectrometry, ion source design, tandem mass spectrometry, pyrolysis mass spectrometry, etc.). She was a Post Doctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Molecular Cardiology at The Cleveland Clinic under the supervision of Kathleen L. Berkner where she expanded her expertise to include cellular and molecular biology techniques. She studied the effect of the ABCC6 transporters on pseudoxanthoma elasticum. Sara analyzes samples for both internal and external collaborators. Her personal research focuses on using quantitative proteomics to study protein dysregulation as a function of disease. She has research collaborations with the Department of Urology at University Hospitals and Case faculty members from the Departments of: Urology, Molecular Biology, and Microbiology.
